Preparing your handwriting or photo for engraving

A familiar signature, a handwritten note, or a meaningful photograph can make a gift feel deeply personal. A clear starting file helps us understand the details you want to preserve. Start with the best original you have, then tell us what matters about it and where you would like it engraved.

Choose the product and placement first

An image that works in one space may not suit another. Choose your product and an available engraving area before preparing a detailed layout. If you are still deciding, our wallet guide can help. For handwriting, a logo, or a photograph, contact us before ordering to confirm suitability for the material and space.

Engraving interprets an image rather than reproducing a full-color photo. Fine background details, subtle shading, and tiny lettering may not read the way they do on a screen. Tell us which part carries the meaning—a face, a pet, a signature, or a few particular words—so the question is clear from the beginning.

Photograph handwriting straight on

Lay the note flat and photograph it from directly above in even light. Keep shadows, glare, and fingers away from the writing. Make sure the important words are sharp and fully inside the frame. If you have a scanner, a clear scan is another useful starting point; keep the original file as well as any edited copy.

Avoid repeatedly taking screenshots or forwarding compressed copies when the original is available. Do not trace over delicate handwriting or apply a strong filter simply to make it look cleaner. If the note is faded or damaged, send the clearest version you have and explain which marks should be preserved.

Pick a photograph with a clear subject

Choose a sharp image where the face or feature you care about is easy to see. Look for a subject that is distinct from the background, without deep shadows hiding important details. A simple composition gives us a clearer starting point than a busy collage containing many small elements.

If you are choosing between a few images, label them clearly and tell us which is your first choice. Do not assume every attached picture should appear together. Keep an uncropped original available; a close crop can be helpful for explaining your idea, but it can also remove details needed to understand the image.

Attach the files to the right item

On the product page, choose an engraving option to reveal the upload field. You can attach up to 5 JPG, PNG, WEBP, or PDF files, no larger than 10 MB each. Select files you can open successfully on your own device. Renaming a file's extension does not convert it to a supported format.

Use recognizable filenames such as “front-signature.jpg” and “inside-note.png.” In the engraving text field, explain which file belongs to which selected area and separate your instructions from any wording to be engraved. For example: “Use front-signature.jpg on the front; engrave the words ‘Always with you’ inside.” Only request areas available for your selected product.

Include only information needed for the design. Crop unrelated addresses or account details out of a copy, and avoid uploading identification documents. Use artwork you own or have permission to use; ask the person whose private note or photograph you plan to share when appropriate.

Review before you place the order

Check your color, engraving placement, exact text, and artwork filenames in the cart. The filenames help confirm which files are attached; they are not a finished engraving proof. Product photos also show examples, not a live rendering of your uploaded artwork.

If the layout, image quality, or wording is uncertain, ask us before ordering rather than relying on an attachment to explain everything.
